How XI Jinping Took Control of China

For decades, China has stood as one of the most powerful nations on earth. At the center of that rise stands one man, Xi Jinping. His story isn’t just about politics; it’s about power, control, and the transformation of an entire country. Understanding how Xi Jinping came to lead modern China gives us a glimpse into how influence and ideology can reshape the world.

Early Life and the Fall of a Family

Born in 1953 in Beijing, Xi Jinping grew up in a privileged environment. His father was an influential revolutionary who served under Mao Zedong during China’s Communist revolution. But during Mao’s Cultural Revolution in the 1960s, Xi’s father was publicly shamed and exiled. The family lost everything, and Xi was sent to live in a remote village and work in harsh labor conditions.

That experience defined him. Living in a cave, Xi faced hunger, exhaustion, and isolation. He later described this period as overcoming the “five hurdles” fleas, food, life, labor, and thought. It was here that Xi Jinping learned to adapt and survive, traits that would shape his rise to power.

Rising Through the Ranks of China’s Communist Party

After years in the countryside, Xi returned to Beijing to study chemical engineering. He later joined the Communist Party and advanced through local leadership positions. Instead of fighting for power in Beijing like many of his peers, he built his reputation in smaller provinces. His success in local leadership helped him climb to national prominence.

By the early 2000s, Xi had gained recognition as a capable administrator and loyal party member. In 2008, he was named Vice President of China. Four years later, after a mysterious two-week disappearance that sparked rumors and conspiracies, he was announced as China’s new leader.

Xi Jinping’s Consolidation of Power

Once in power, Xi Jinping launched an anti-corruption campaign that resulted in the removal of over 200,000 officials. While some viewed this as a fight against corruption, many believed it was a strategic purge aimed at eliminating political rivals. Over time, Xi dismantled the collective leadership system designed to prevent another dictator and instead centralized authority around himself.

In 2018, he abolished presidential term limits effectively allowing him to rule for life. This move marked the end of an era of shared governance and the start of what many call “Xi Jinping Thought,” an official doctrine taught in schools, workplaces, and even on a required government app that tracks citizen engagement.

Control, Censorship, and Modern China

Under Xi Jinping, China’s government has tightened its grip on information and technology. Internet use is heavily censored. Citizens must link their real identities to online accounts, and speech critical of the government can result in imprisonment. The media, education system, and entertainment industries are all required to promote the Communist Party’s values.

Meanwhile, China’s military has grown into one of the world’s largest, and its influence abroad continues to expand. Domestically, the country’s rapid modernization has created futuristic cities and immense wealth for some, while others live under strict surveillance and limited freedoms.

The Legacy of Xi Jinping

Xi Jinping has transformed China into a global superpower, albeit at a significant cost. While millions have benefited from economic growth, freedom of expression has faded. His leadership has blurred the line between national pride and total control.

As the world watches, one thing is clearXi Jinping has permanently altered the course of modern China. His vision and authority will shape not just his nation’s future, but the balance of power across the globe.
