Cocaine Bear – How Drew Thornton Created the Real Life Monster

Tim Stone and Jaron Myers screaming with a roaring bear behind them over a graphic that reads 'cocaine bear, drew thornton, plane crashes, and what really happened'

The Cocaine Bear trailer has been making rounds on the internet since its release. What many people don’t know about the movie is that it’s based on a true story. Of course, the cinema embellishes it a ton. But it is a true story.

In 1985 Andrew Thornton, paranoid and on the run, ditched his plane during a drug run and fell to his death in the Appalachian mountains. Thornton broke bad after a career as an undercover officer and started running Cocaine from South America across the US. The night he died, he was transporting thousands of pounds of Cocaine. A bear then consumed that Cocaine. The bear went on a rampage in the movie, which didn’t happen. But the bear is now a Kentucky icon. The more exciting side of the story, however, is the life of Andrew Thornton. It’s a story full of intrigue, betrayal, and a lust for power. Listen to the full story on this week’s episode of TILLN.
